On November 13, 1975, in accordance with the Decree of Presidium of the Supreme Soviet USSR, a new region was founded in Sevastopol city, the region was named after the first spaceman of the Earth - Yuriy Alexeevich Gagarin.

The territory of the Gagarinskiy district is 6100 hectares and includes the micro-regions of Kamyshovaya, Streletskaya and Kazachiya Bays, Oktyabrskaya Revolyutsiya avenue, Grushevka and industrial area. The population of the region is about 110 thousand people.

The large industrial enterprises of fish catching and processing branches, electronic industry, higher and secondary schools are situated in the Gagarinskiy region, the bases and units of the Navy and Air Defence of the Black Sea Navy of Russia are based here.

The biggest enterprises and institutions of the region are:

• The Public Corporation "Yugreftransflot", which has the biggest part of the refrigerator fleet of the country;
• Sevastopol Sea Fish Port - the biggest seaport in Crimea (along with the Kerch Port);
• Sevastopol Authority of the ocean fishery and SSE "Atlantica" - most biggest fish catching association of Ukraine;
• The Public Corporation "Musson" and "Sevastopol Mayak" - used to be the leaders of electronic industry, and were working for the Soviet Military Industrial Complex, but presently are reconstructing their productions for civil needs only;
• Sevastopol National Technical university - the biggest Higher university of Sevastopol;
• Sevastopol Naval Institute of P. S. Nakhimov - the only higher institute of Ukraine that prepares the officers for the national Navy Forces;

Over 2000 enterprises of different forms of property are working in the region. They produce the sea electronic emergency-rescue facilities, radio stations of mobile connection, ship lighting equipment, high-accuracy sensors, radio-electronic and lighting home instruments, paint-work production.

Gagarinskiy region is washed by the sea from south, west and north; the length of the coast line is 43,6 km. That is why there are many objects of the recreation infrastructure here - spas and health camps for children, beaches, yacht-club, boating stations and others.

The archaeological monument of the world value, which had a big importance in the history of Slavonic people - The National reserve "Khersoness Tavricheskiy" is situated in Gagarinskiy region. There are 150 monuments of archaeology, 31 monuments of the Great Patriotic War and 11 monuments of history and culture are situated at the territory of the region.

Gagarinskiy region is the youngest one in Sevastopol  - and today it stays the most developing : the new micro-regions, the new trolley bus lines and roads are being built here, the new enterprises are founded.
