Balaklavskiy district has the biggest part of the territory of the city-region. Its area is 54,4 km², the population is 44,7 thousand people. The district center is the satellite town of Sevastopol - the ancient Balaklava.
And to this day, the ruins of the Genoa Fortress Chembalo (XIV - XV cc.) tower at the steep slopes, above the Balaklava Bay, reminding about the time of the Great Silk Way, about the brave raids of the Zaporozhskie cossacks to Balaklava, occupied by Turks, about deeds of the Greek battalion, which defended the Fortress during the Crimean War, and about many other historical events.
Amazing, picturesque places, glorified by Pushkin and Mitskevich, Bryusov and Kuprin, are situated in the Balaklava district.
The town of the district submission, Inkerman, with population of 12 thousand people and 32 suburban and rural populated areas are situated at the territory of the region. The population of Balaklava itself is 18,7 thousand people.
There are several big enterprises working in the Balaklava region, they build a part of Sevastopol city budget:
During the First Defence of Sevastopol (1854 -1855) a base of British troops was located in Balaklava, and one of the most bloody battles, known as Balaklavskoe in history, occurred in the valley of Zolotaya Balka.
The southernmost spot of Ukraine - the cape Sarych, is situated at the territory of Balaklava region, not far from here a state dacha "Zarya" is located, which is the summer residence of the president of the country. The dramatic events of August 1991 in the former USSR were related to the object "Zarya", and they opened a way to the independence of Ukraine.

This is one of the most picturesque corners of the area. Here, at the coast of the Balaklava Bay hidden from the sea by mountains, as a legend tells, Odyssey landed, and the daughter of Fivane Tsar Agamemnon Ifigeniy made the bloody rites in the temple of the Virgin Goddess at the Fiolent cape.
