Geography & climate

Sevastopol region is situated in the south-western part of Crimean peninsula. Its lands border on Bakhchisaray region from the north-west and on the other administrative district of the Autonomous republic of Crimea, the Big Yalta, from the south-east. The region is washed by the warm waters of Black sea from west and south. There are more than 30 bays within the bounds of the region. Geographical location of the city - 47’37" North latitude, 33’31" East longitude. The city is spread on the shores of cozy and deep-water bays and takes the extensive coastal territory of twenty kilometers and extends to the north for 50 km from the southernmost of Ukraine and Crimea - the Sarych Cape. The length from west to east is 43 km. The length of the sea coastline is 152 km, the length of the land border is 106 km. The end pointsare: the Lukull Cape in the north, the Sarych Cape in the south, the Khersoness Cape in the west, and the forest tract with Tez-Bair mountain at the Ai-Petri mountain pasture in the east.

The distance from Sevastopol to Kiev is 1050 km, to Moscow is 1500 km, to Yalta is  85 km, to Istanbul is 490 km, to Rome is 1700 km, to Marcel is 2100 km, to Paris is  2400 km, to London is  2800 km.

The total area of the city is 1079 square km - this is more than the territory of such city-states as Moscow, New York or Shanghai. The water area of the inner bays takes 216 square km of the total area.

The climate at the territory of Sevastopol region is close to the subtropical climate of the Southern coast of Crimea - comparatively mild, sea, and moderate-continental in foothills, moderate-continental with features of subtropical Mediterranean kind in the south-eastern coast. The average monthly air temperature is always positive during the year. The coldest month is January (+1,3 ºС), the warmest is July (+23,2 ºС). The temperature of the surface layer of the Black sea water at Sevastopol coast is also positive during the year and is 22,2 ºС in July. Atmospheric precipitation is irregular: from 280 to 400 mm. The
driest month is July.
